Black walnut trees (Juglans nigra) are native southeastern trees that thrive in rich, moist soils. They live for aournd 130 years and produce crops of nuts each year starting at year 20. The nuts are grown commercially in the U.S., with the state of Missouri being the largest producer of black walnuts. The wood is prized for gun stocks, furniture, and flooring. The nut meat is edible by humans and adored by animals. Grows best in USDA zones 6-9. These trees are 12-24" tall. (Disclaimer: may be toxic to horses and other livestock).
